Why consolidation saves money

Consolidation means combining parcels from different stores into one box before it leaves Korea. It's free with us, and it's one of the simplest ways to cut what you pay for shipping. This post shows why with real numbers, and covers the cases where combining, or waiting to combine, doesn't pay off.
Why one box costs less than three
Two things make separate boxes expensive:
- Every outbound shipment has a ₩3,000 packing and handling fee. Three boxes pay it three times. One box pays it once.
- Postage rises more slowly than weight. The first half-kilo is the expensive part. For EMS to the UK, the first 0.5 kg costs ₩39,500. After that, each extra 0.5 kg adds only ₩5,000 to ₩5,500, up to 2 kg.
A worked example: three parcels to the UK
Say you order from three Korean stores and each parcel weighs 0.5 kg when packed. Here's EMS to the UK at Korea Post's published 2026 rates.
| Three separate boxes | One combined box | |
|---|---|---|
| Chargeable weight | 3 × 0.5 kg | 1.5 kg |
| EMS postage | 3 × ₩39,500 = ₩118,500 | ₩50,000 |
| Packing and handling | 3 × ₩3,000 = ₩9,000 | ₩3,000 |
| Total | ₩127,500 (about $98.26) | ₩53,000 (about $40.85) |
Combining saves ₩74,500, about $57.41, on the same items with the same shipping method. The dollar figures use about ₩1,298 per dollar, the 28 September 2026 mid-market rate plus our 4.5% margin.
The same idea works with slower methods. By K-Packet to the UK:
| Three separate boxes | One combined box | |
|---|---|---|
| K-Packet postage | 3 × ₩11,470 = ₩34,410 | ₩25,090 |
| Packing and handling | ₩9,000 | ₩3,000 |
| Total | ₩43,410 (about $33.46) | ₩28,090 (about $21.65) |
That's ₩15,320 less, about $11.81.
One condition: the combined box has to stay at 1.5 kg chargeable weight, which brings us to box size.
Volumetric weight: keep the box compact
EMS and EMS Premium charge by volumetric weight when it's higher than the actual weight:
length × width × height (cm) ÷ 6000
FedEx uses ÷ 5000. K-Packet doesn't use volumetric weight at all, but it's limited to 2 kg.
For the example above to work, the combined box must be no bigger than 9,000 cm³ (1.5 kg × 6000). A 30 × 20 × 15 cm box is exactly that. Pack the same 1.5 kg into a 40 × 30 × 20 cm box and it counts as 4 kg, which is ₩79,000 by EMS to the UK instead of ₩50,000.
What we do, and what you can ask for:
- We remove bulky outer delivery boxes and repack into a box that fits.
- We never remove product packaging. Album boxes, cosmetic cartons and shoe boxes stay as they are, so they arrive the way the brand made them.
- Vacuum-packing soft items such as clothes and plush toys is ₩5,000 and can shrink a box noticeably.
- Light but bulky boxes under 2 kg can be a good fit for K-Packet, which doesn't use volumetric weight (the box still has to fit K-Packet's size limits).
- Poster tubes and large boxed sets add length. It can be cheaper to ship them separately by a method that suits them. Ask us to compare.
When to split instead
Consolidating is usually right, but not always.
Over 2 kg, splitting can beat one EMS box. A 3 kg box to the UK by EMS is ₩66,500 plus ₩3,000 handling, which is ₩69,500. Two 1.5 kg K-Packets cost 2 × ₩25,090 plus 2 × ₩3,000, which is ₩56,180. That's slower, but ₩13,320 less. By air parcel, the same 3 kg box is ₩37,000 plus ₩3,000, which is ₩40,000, if you can wait 10–25 days. The calculator compares these for your exact box.
Waiting too long costs storage. Storage is free for 60 days from when a parcel arrives. After that, it's ₩500 per day per parcel (₩1,000 per day over 5 kg), capped at ₩30,000 per parcel. Three parcels kept 20 days past their free period would cost 3 × 20 × ₩500 = ₩30,000, which eats a good part of the saving. If a pre-order is months away, it may be better to ship what you have now.
A bigger box can cross a customs threshold. Combining raises the value of a single parcel. That can matter in countries where the rules change above a certain value, for example the EU's €150 low-value parcel limit, the UK's £135 duty relief, or Canada's CAD 20 threshold for GST/HST. Our customs figures are estimates, and customs in your country decides.
How to consolidate
- Let your parcels collect in your box. Each one gets arrival photos and a basic check.
- When you're ready, choose the parcels to ship together and pick a shipping method.
- We pack them into one box, removing outer delivery boxes where that helps, and you pay the actual shipping, unless you chose to pay once at the start.
Extras like extra protection (₩2,000) or priority packing within 1 business day (₩3,000) can be added at this stage. The full fee list is on pricing, and questions are welcome in community Q&A.
